WASHINGTON - US President Donald Trump's Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has resigned from her post.

The president and the ambassador told reporters as they sat together in the Oval Office that Haley would be leaving at the end of this calendar year.

With Haley sitting at his side, Trump told a crowd of reporters that she will be leaving at the end of the year, explaining that her job as ambassador allowed her to get to know numerous other worldwide players and world leaders.

Trump told reporters that he is hopeful that Haley will return to the administration at some point, perhaps in a different capacity.

Still, the prospect of post-midterm changes has loomed over the West Wing, and Haley's exit was one of those discussed, according to a senior administration official not authorized to publicly discuss private conversations.

Haley, in turn, thanked Trump and praised members of his family before mentioning her own family.

"I think you have to be selfless enough to know when to step aside and let someone else do the job", she said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders says President Trump will meet Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30am EST. He said that she had done a "fantastic job" and would leave at the end of the year. On her first day as United Nations ambassador she warned: "For those that don't have our back, we're taking names". "There certainly were great areas of contention between the United States and the U.N. But she played a very important and constructive role".

Haley said that while other countries may not like what American now stood for, she said the global community respected it nonetheless.

"More instability in an already unstable Trump administration", Rep.

She was a fierce defender of Israel, and also a ferocious critic of Russian Federation - even more so than her boss. She said she would be supporting Trump. That included a majority, 55%, of Democrats.

As a strong supporter of term limits, I have long believed that rotation in office benefits the public. Marco Rubio in her state's all-important 2016 presidential primary and later backing Texas Sen. Haley's resignation was a closely guarded secret. She and Trump have never butted heads, at least publicly, though there has been friction - she once said that his sexual assault accusers should be heard out.

At the U.N., Haley helped spearhead the Trump administration's efforts to combat what it alleged to be anti-American and anti-Israel actions by the worldwide body. She once threatened to "take names" of countries that have opposed American policy in Israel. "She challenged friend and foe to be better". For that too, I will always be grateful.
