Power of SA passport drops in global ranking

Japan has the strongest passport in the world according to new Henley & Partners ranking

Japan now has the world's most powerful passport

Passport: Japan has world's most powerful passport - but did the United Kingdom make the top 10?

Last year, a ranking of passports by worldwide global financial advisory firm Arton Capital showed that the Philippine passport is moderately weak, with its holders having visa-free access to only 61 countries.

The UK passport grants citizens visa-free access to 189 countries.

Japan, according to the 2018 Henley Passport Index, is the world's "strongest" passport, meaning Japanese passport holders enjoy the most visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to the most destinations at 190.

The index, by Henley & Partners, a citizenship and planning firm, showed Japan to have the most powerful passport on the planet. Every CBI program country has improved its visa-free/visa-on-arrival score since the start of the year.

Germany shares third spot with South Korea and France, which all have visa-free access to 188 countries. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Sweden and Spain all came in joint-fourth, with 187 destinations accessible to their citizens.

Seychelles residents can now travel to 152 destinations without a visa, and Mauritius residents to 146, both up a single destination since the last quarterly update to the rankings.

VISA-FREE TRAVEL? The Philippines, unfortunately, isn't as lucky as its Asian neighbors.

The index also identified the countries with the greatest improvement in visa-free travel for citizens, including China and the UAE - which secured the most visa-waiver agreements out of all the countries this year, CNN reported.

Georgia, Ukraine and United Arab Emirates were the biggest climbers in the 2018 ranking.

"Along with the Henley & Partners - Kochenov Quality of Nationality Index, the Henley Passport Index is considered the most credible reference tool within the investment migration industry", it said.
