WTA roundup: Wang rallies into Hong Kong final

Dayana Yastremska beat Wang Qiang 6-2 6-1 to claim Hong Kong Open title

Dayana Yastremska beat Wang Qiang 6-2 6-1 to claim Hong Kong Open title

Sixth-seeded Wang Qiang of China rallied on Saturday to pull off a big upset against fourth-seeded Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-5 to reach the Hong Kong Open final against Dayana Yastremska of the Ukraine.

Fifth-seeded Italian Camila Giorgi won her second career title, beating Russian qualifier Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1 in the final in Linz, Austria.

The top seed, who has an opportunity to secure her place at the WTA Finals a week early, was in trouble as she trailed Chinese star Wang Qiang 6-2 5-2.

She then clawed her way back from a 1-4 deficit, with Muguruza - appearing exhausted and out of ideas by the end of the match - losing her final service game with two unforced errors.

Wang, whose two career titles have come during a run fine of form in the second half of 2018, avoided a second-set bagel by breaking in game five, but it proved a brief reprieve as Yastremska went on to complete the dominant win.

Wang had grabbed headlines at the French Open with her straight-sets demolition of Venus Williams, offering a hint of what was to come, and later overcame Karolina Pliskova in both Beijing and Wuhan. She's hasn't dropped a set this week en route to the semi-finals.

"I felt like she had her A-game today", Gavrilova said. "I think I played good serves, good returns, and I did everything well today".

She said she may still play in Zhuhai and is now eyeing a top 20 ranking in the new year.

"I just concentrated on court, point by point", Wang assessed.

The Ukrainian offered glimpses of fantastic attacking tennis to beat Kristina Kucova 7-6 (6) 6-2, to progress to her first Tour-level semifinal.
