American pilot dies in Ukrainian Air Force fighter jet crash

An American pilot was killed in a fighter jet crash during a training operation conducted in Ukraine Tuesday.

The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces said the two-seat Su-27UB went down in the Kmelnitskyi region.

Officials told last week that Clear Sky is the first time F-15s from the California Air National Guard have touched down in Ukraine, and the first time the aircraft has been in Ukraine overall since 1998. The incident is now under investigation and do not have any other information to provide at this time.

"We have seen reports claiming a United States casualty and can confirm a U.S. service member was involved in this incident", the release said.

The U.S. Air Force command based in Europe said the American pilot, who was not identified, was among the two pilots on board at the time.
