Full Hunter’s Moon To Light Up The Night Sky

The Hunter's Moon, owing to the orange-red tinge of the moon, is also known as blood moon.

This year's Hunter's Moon first appeared in the sky on Wednesday, October 24, at 5.45pm BST, just below the horizon.

'According to the Farmer's Almanac, with the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it is time to hunt, ' a NASA spokesperson said.

The Hunter's Moon will appear brighter, larger and clearer than a normal moon and you'll be able to see it no matter the weather conditions, though clear skies are always best for viewing astronomical events. Things changed slightly in 2018, with the Harvest Moon falling on september 24, just a few days after the autumnal equinox. For example, in southeastern Asia, October is usually known as the end of monsoon season, so that influenced the nickname for the month's full moon.

Waxing crescent: As the moon moves around the Earth, the side of the moon we see slowly begins to be lit by sunlight.

Some years, the Mourning Moon is in November, while other years, it is in December. It's thought to get its name from providing light for hunters to catch animals as daylight hours get shorter to prepare and preserve for the winter months.

Waning crescent: Only a small portion of the moon receives direct sunlight.
