Fmcg suppliers make new global commitment on plastics

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation launched its New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The pledge by 250 organisations included numerous world's biggest packaging producers, leading consumer brands, retailers and recyclers, as well as governments and NGOs.

Gwen Holland, the Campus waste co-ordinator, said: "Bangor University fully supports the vision for a circular economy for plastics, and is a very proud signatory of the New Plastic Economy Global Commitment". We can not recycle and clean our way out of this crisis ― we must move upstream to the source of the flow.

UPM Raflatac has signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, a new initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to work towards a circular economy for plastics.

The signatories, which also include the governments of the UK, France and Scotland, pledge to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use to reuseable packaging instead.

Organisations including Nestle; The Coca-Cola Company; PepsiCo; Pernod Ricard; Unilever; Danone and Mars, Incorporated, have signed the pledge, and the commitment has also been endorsed by the World Economic Forum, The Consumer Goods Forum and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Targets will be reviewed every 18 months and will become increasingly ambitious over the coming years. All businesses that have signed up to the Commitment will publish annual progress data. The AQUA brand also pledged to recover more plastic than it uses in Indonesia, including through interception of marine littering.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation started its research on plastic pollution four years ago.

In order to effectively incentivise a sufficient number of Indonesia's estimated 28 million people living in poverty, Plastic Bank uses a blockchain solution linked to a mobile app that reliably rewards individual plastic collectors for the amount of plastic they bring into collection centres using digital tokens instead of cash.

The Washington-based environmental group Oceana, for its part, said the commitments are "vague promises" and called on companies to stop using plastics.

'Most efforts until now have been focused on cleaning up plastic pollution. "This commitment is about eliminating pollution at its source", Rob Opsomer, who leads the foundation's New Plastics Economy initiative, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
