At least 12 people are dead, including sheriff's sergeant Ron Helus, after a 28-year-old gunman opened fire at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, late Wednesday.

He hasn't been able to contact his friend again but knows she is safe, he told the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities said the gunman died inside the bar but would not say how he died.

"There's just no way to describe this", he said.

Dean said the suspect had an extended magazine for his gun, and it was not clear whether he reloaded during the attack.

"It's a horrific scene in there", Dean said at a news conference early Thursday in the parking lot of the Borderline Bar & Grill.

The suspected gunman was reportedly found dead inside the bar and police have not yet revealed the motives for the shooting. Dean said Helus undoubtedly saved lives by going in to confront the gunman. The specialist didn't feel that Long qualified to be detained under 5150, the California law that allows for a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation if a person is deemed a danger to himself or others. "And he was left at that scene last April".

He said he heard from people inside that they were hiding in bathrooms and the attic of the bar.

He said that there are at least "six victims including one deputy" who are still inside the bar.

Cody Coffman has been identified as one of the victims of the California bar shooting. "There is blood everywhere and the suspect is part of that, and I didn't want to get that close and disturb the scene and possibly disturb the investigation". They are still searching and investigating.

His handgun was created to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber - but the extended magazine, which is illegal in California, held more bullets, Dean said. Hundreds are believed to have been inside at the time of the incident, according to Capt. Garo Kuredjian with the sheriff's office.

Authorities say they don't know if there is a terrorism link to the shooting.

Additional units, including SWAT personnel arrived on the scene minutes later and found 11 victims and the deceased gunman.

The shooting Wednesday night took place during a college country night, according to Borderline's website.

The city of about 130,000 people is around 40 miles (64km) west of Los Angeles.
