At least one person was killed and two others wounded in a rush hour stabbing incident in Melbourne's central business district, police said on Friday.
"Police shot the male in a chest and he is now in critical condition under guard in hospital", Victorian police superintendent David Clayton told reporters.
Emergency services were called to a auto fire at the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets about 4.20pm on Friday.
The suspect has been arrested and is in hospital in a critical condition, under police guard. At a press conference, a police spokesperson said there are no links to terrorism at this stage.
Another person at the scene said: "I saw people running, screaming".
A second person has been taken to hospital with a head injury, however their condition is not yet known.
Two other victims have been taken to hospital with injuries. "The area has been cordoned off", police said.
'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.
More than 100 police have swarmed on the area.

Chilling footage uploaded to social media shows a man attacking police with a knife moments after the vehicle exploded.
'Police response was swift and overwhelming.
"Police are aware of an incident in the vicinity of Bourke Street", Victoria Police have said in a statement.
Police confirmed the man was shot and is in a critical condition.
The incident comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January past year.
