The Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, just across the East River from Manhattan, and Crystal City, Virginia, about a mile from the Pentagon, were selected by the retail giant, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. The site also indirectly supports over 50,000 other jobs, Amazon said.
The other cities included Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Denver, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Montgomery County in Maryland, Nashville, Newark, New York City, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Toronto and Washington, D.C.
Still, landing HQ2 would represent "incredible validation of just how far NY has come", says Jonathan Bowles, executive director of the Center for an Urban Future think tank.

This website is not intended for users located within the European Economic Area.
What followed was months of speculation and reports of under-the-radar assessments and site visits by Amazon representatives.
Amazon drew criticism in recent weeks for dangling a $5 billion prize and collecting data from hundreds of cities if it were to only end up choosing the power corridor East Coast cities.
Amazon's decision leaves a group of cities that expended months of resources and time without a clear reward.
Critics of the process say already wealthy corporations often use corporate subsidies to lower costs of projects that they would have pursued anyway.
