Wizards Unite will see players learn spells and team up with their friends to battle creatures in AR.

That all changed today, though.

Niantic and WB Games surprised everyone this morning by dropping the first trailer for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, the spiritual successor to the world-shatteringly popular Pokemon GO. The teaser trailer is just 31 seconds long altogether and doesn't include any gameplay footage.

"Traces of magic are appearing across the Muggle world without warning and in a rather chaotic manner", the site reads.

Wizards and witches around the world, this is a huge day for the Harry Potter community! So, to say that it's a big deal that magic is showing up (seemingly) at random in the Muggle world would be an understatement. Check out the trailer below via the game's Youtube channel to get a taste of what the new game will bring to your mobile experience. The threat on the Wizarding World is now only known as the Calamity; no doubt players will be roving the streets using their mobile devices as wands to cast spells, fight off fantastic beasts, and discover what the Calamity really is.

The game is set to Apparate onto mobile devices in 2019. What we do know is that the game will be fully rooted in the magical universe of Harry Potter, although it isn't adapted from any of the existing books or films. Niantic had already stated that the game would include famous characters so an appearance from the Golden Trio seems all but confirmed. It's possible then, that Newt Scamander could show up in the game too, possibly as part of a tie-in event.
