New Honda Passport mid-size SUV launched

2019 Honda Passport Silver Front Left Quarter

If you get the sense that you’ve seen the Honda Passport before in a way that’s true. It’s a 5-passenger Honda Pilot with subtle styling changes

There will be only four trim levels on the table, Sport, EX-L, Touring, and Elite, and all will come equipped with features like 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, Smart Entry, three-zone automatic climate control and an 8-inch touchscreen. It is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional torque vectoring all-wheel drive system. Safety was also a big concern, as all Passport models include the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies.

An available hands-free power tailgate opens to reveal 41.2 cu. -ft. of space behind the rear seat, and what Honda claims is the largest underfloor storage area of any vehicle in the segment (2.5 cu. -ft.).

Not that there's anything wrong with the Honda Pilot or the platform on which it is based. Canadian consumers will get their first look at the SUV when it is presented at the Montreal auto show in January.

The Passport's interior boasts a 100 cubic-foot maximum cargo capacity with the rear seat folded flat.

Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard for all Passports except the Sport, while Touring and Elite trims include front and rear parking sensors. It's mostly what we expected: a five-passenger, 280-hp, V6-powered, off-road capable SUV.

Since the Passport was created to venture off-road, all models are equipped with an Intelligent Traction Management system which has normal, sand, snow and mud modes on all-wheel drive variants.

While the Pilot is sold unashamedly as a family hauler with a slight dash of off-roading ability, the Passport is playing up its off-road chops, with the company stating shorter rear overhang means "improved approach, departure and breakover angles, [making it] suitable for more rugged terrain".

Honda will build the 2019 Passport in its Lincoln, Alabama assembly plant.

. Putting money where the mouth is, Honda has added several off-roading features such as Intelligent Traction Management system with Normal, Sand, Snow and Mud driving modes on AWD variants.

The 2019 Honda Passport unveiled Tuesday in Los Angeles shares only its outdoorsy attitude with the last Honda to bare the Passport nameplate.
