The last time the company refreshed the icons was five years ago with the release of Office 2013.

Microsoft has given the icon for its Office family of apps a whole new, fresh and modern look, and they are very proud of it.

With the new design, Microsoft is making the most important change where the Office apps are no longer represented by a letter.

The new Microsoft app icons is rolling out in the coming months starting with mobile and web apps, followed by other platforms.

"From the get-go, we embraced Office's rich history and used it to inform design decisions".

The video showed off apps like Photos, Mail, Calculator, Calendar, File Explorer, and Microsoft News with the new iconography style on the Start Menu, and they actually look really good. Simplicity and harmony are key visual elements that reflect the seamless connectivity and intuitiveness of Office apps.

One of the striking changes is the decoupling of the letter and symbol.

Microsoft was one of the pioneers of the current trend of flat design, but recently the company has been evolving its aesthetic into something a bit more three-dimensional. Microsoft has tried to position itself as a company friendlier to artists and creative folk with its Surface hardware and various Windows 10 Updates, but its design has remained inconsistent over the years.

But regardless of your operating system preferences, Microsoft Office is still the best productivity suite out there. Outlook Mobile, in particular, is getting overhauled with support for shared mailboxes and updated gestures.
