Qualcomm Ushers in Decade of 5G at Summit on Maui

In October, Verizon launched 5G Home, the world's first commercial 5G network in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, CA, marking a major step toward bringing the technology into the mainstream, as previously reported by TechRepublic. Make no mistake, the internal platform name of "sm8150" had been accurate all along, but the company chose to continue their existing branding scheme for the next mobile platform's marketing name-not unlike older Qualcomm flagship mobile platforms like the msm8996 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 820) or msm8974 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 800).

When fully implemented, it will offer capacity and download speed many times faster than today's 4G LTE network.

On Monday, Verizon and Samsung announced plans to launch one of the first commercial 5G smartphones in the first half of 2019, which will use chips from Qualcomm.

It was confirmed earlier this week that a prototype Samsung 5G phone would be shown off at Qualcomm's Tech Summit in Hawaii.

Verizon did say that Samsung will use Qualcomm's 5G tech in the upcoming phone.

He also rejected the United Kingdom government's position that the case is purely hypothetical and therefore inadmissible. A final ruling on the case is due to be made at a later date.

Qualcomm has finally unveiled its next top-end chipset processor for smartphones, the Snapdragon 855 SoC.

Qualcomm also announced the 3D Sonic Sensor, an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner that will work even when the screen guard is applied. The company states that the new mobile platform features their fourth-generation, multi-core AI Engine with up to 3 times the AI performance compared to the Snapdragon 845. The 3D Sonic Super will basically capture a full 3D image of the users fingertips instead of a simple 2D image. The sensor will also be able to scan your finger if it is oily, greasy and wet, and unlock the device.

This battery technology, which allows the phone to become a charging hotspot for other devices, has already appeared on the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Samsung could follow with its own take on this clever feature.

What hasn't yet been revealed is how the overall CPU and GPU performance has increased, how much more efficient it is than the previous generation, and how all of these changes will manifest themselves in real-world use-cases. As opposed to the optical solutions we see in shipping phones today, this new ultrasonic sensor should bring more speed and accuracy to under display fingerprint sensors. Qualcomm says it's built computer vision hardware into the chip, enabling phones to better recognize people and objects they're looking at.
