Cardi B is also racking up the nominations with five nods, including the big Album of the Year award for Invasion of Privacy.

If Lamar felt like he got snubbed past year, then he'll feel better about the 2019 Grammys, as he earned more nominations than anybody else, with eight total.

For song of the year, the nominees included Carlile, plus the songwriters for Lamar and SZA's "All Stars"; Ella Mai's "Boo'd Up"; Drake's "God's Plan"; Shawn Mendes' "In My Blood"; Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey's "The Middle"; Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow"; and Childish Gambino's "This is America".

But the Recording Academy continued its fraught relationship with Jay-Z and Beyoncé by shutting out their joint album "Everything is Love" from major categories.

The leading nominees will face stiff competition on February 10 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles from fellow rappers Cardi B and Childish Gambino - as well as Lady Gaga, who snared nominations in both of those top categories for her hit "Shallow", performed with co-star Bradley Cooper in the film "A Star Is Born".

Carlile - a folk-rock singer known for her bluesy, dynamic voice - earned six nominations, including three across the major categories. While she's having a more hard week than Lamar after announcing her separation from husband Offset, hopefully the Grammy news will continue to lift her spirits. The singer has released seven well-received, musically eclectic albums but has never won a Grammy.

After leading nominations a year ago, however, Jay-Z and his pop queen wife Beyonce were left out of the top categories despite acclaim for their joint project "Everything is Love".

The Carters did get nominations for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best R&B Performance and Best Music Video. Cardi will also compete for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance ("Be Careful"), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her Maroon 5 collaboration "Girls Like You".
