Adonis Stevenson suffered 'traumatic brain injury' in Oleksandr Gvozdyk defeat

Stevenson suffered the injury when he lost the light heavyweight world title by 11th-round knockout to Oleksandr Gvozdyk at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, after which he was taken to Enfant-Jesus Hospital.

Dr. Alexis Turgeon, specialist physician in intensive care medicine at Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus of the CHU de Québec-Université Laval, shared the latest update, which can be seen below, on Stevenson's condition. It is too early to comment on Mr. Stevenson's long-term prognosis. In the circumstances, his situation is stable but it is critical.

"His condition requires mechanical respiratory assistance, deep sedation and specialized neurological monitoring", she said. Promoted by Yvon Michel, Stevenson entered his fight with Gvozdyk at 9-0-1 with seven KOs in championship bouts, including his title-winning 76-second stoppage of Chad Dawson in June 2013.

Earlier on Sunday, Michel tweeted his thanks on behalf of Stevenson's wife and family: "Thank you for your many messages of encouragement and support". "They want to be at the bedside of Mr. Stevenson and ask everyone to respect their privacy".

Stevenson slumped to the canvas and though he eventually got to his feet, doctors deemed his condition serious enough to send him to hospital. Stevenson was boxing's oldest and longest-reigning champion at the time of the bout and was ahead in two of the judges' scorecards, with the third, tied, before suffering a knockout loss. After Stevenson had fallen in the corner of the ring, the referee stopped the fight.
