"Developed around a so-called "cassette" EV powertrain, the objective is to mitigate any future legislation to restrict the use of classic cars by offering a zero emissions conversion", Aston Martin says.
Using lessons learned from development of an electric option for the Rapide sedan due in 2019, the Aston Martin Works classic vehicle department has developed a self-contained unit referred to as a "cassette" that sits on the original engine and gearbox mountings. Power management for the entire system is done via a screen that is discreetly fitted to the car's interior.
Aston Martin Works expects to begin completing customer Heritage EV conversions next year. This is then mounted on the car's original engine and gearbox mountings, with power cords to feed the car's electrical systems.
Aston Martin will use the same battery electric technology that will soon appear in their first all-electric model, the Rapide E. The power unit is self-contained meaning that the original combustion engine can easily be refitted at a later date should the owner so choose.
