2018 Jeep Wrangler is now being launched in many countries around the world and India is also expecting the arrival of this Iconic SUV in its latest avatar.
The Jeep Wrangler variant tested by Euro NCAP was the four-door Sahara Unlimited, but the rating applies to all variants sold in Europe.
The poor rating is mostly due to the lack of driver assistance systems available on the SUV: emergency braking and lane-keep assist are not standard, or even available on European-spec Wranglers.
"These shocking Euro NCAP test results demonstrate an inconsistent commitment to safety, as FIAT has produced four and five-star cars in the past".
Euro NCAP says the Jeep Wrangler performed poorly in crash tests
"It is truly disappointing to see a brand-new auto being put on sale in 2018 with no autonomous braking system and no lane assistance", said Michiel van Ratingen, the secretary general of Euro NCAP, in a statement. "It is high time we saw a product from the FIAT-Chrysler group offering safety to rival its competitors", says Michiel van Ratingen. The deformation of the footwell indicated that it had reached the limit of its integrity. The vehicle goes through the usual frontal offset crash test as for the Indian cars but also has a side impact, a full frontal test and several pedestrian tests too.
In the offset test, driver chest protection was rated as weak, while leg protection was marginal. Euro NCAP's tests on the Hyundai Santa Fe highlighted an issue where the side curtain airbags of cars equipped with a panoramic roof could be torn during deployment.
You can dive deep into the Euro NCAP website to read the entire report on the Wrangler, but I'll dish out a few salient details here.
As for safety assist, it managed to only score one point, or 7% of the total, its only feature to score points being a seatbelt reminder.
The Panda also scored zero points in the frontal and lateral impact tests for 6- and 10-year old children, with weak chest protection for older kids in the frontal impact test and poor head and neck protection across the board. The European safety organisation invited nine cars: Audi Q3, BMW X5, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jaguar I-Pace, Peugeot 508, Volvo V60 and Volvo S60 for evaluation and the results are on table.
It draws parallels to the two-star score achieved by the Ford Mustang in early 2017, which scored poorly in the area of rear occupant protection.

Greenland's ice is melting at an alarming rate, researchers warn
Another noteworthy aspect of the findings is how little additional warming it now takes to cause huge spikes in ice sheet melting. In the last 20 years, however, melt intensity has increased by up to 575 percent in comparison with the pre-industrial rates.
