If Ms Nauert is confirmed by the Senate, she would be a leading administration voice on Trump's foreign policy. However, she quickly learned key issues and how the United Nations operates. Haley was also a diplomatic novice - though she did arrive in NY with the six years experience of running SC as governor.
President Trump said Friday he would nominate Nauert, 48, who is a former Fox News anchorwoman.
Nauert, a former Fox News host, has seen a meteoric rise in the Trump administration, but that apparently does not equal Cabinet rank. She became the State Department spokeswoman in April 2017, and was named acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs earlier this year.
With her vast expertise in TV journalism, including eight years at Fox News and at least three at ABC, Ms Nauert certainly knows how to behave in public and deliver neat and well-targeted speeches.
During Nauert's tenure at the state department, press briefings went from being daily events to being held once or twice weekly. If her much more recent experience at the State Department provides such rich fodder for critics, it portends a hard confirmation process ahead.

Plucked from Fox by the White House to serve as State Department spokeswoman, Ms Nauert catapulted into the upper echelons of the agency's hierarchy when Mr Tillerson was sacked in March and replaced with Mike Pompeo.
Miller, who advised several secretaries of state under Republican and Democratic administrations, said Haley took advantage of the "empty space" created by media-averse former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to stake out positions on a whole range of foreign policy issues, and that is not likely to be the case with Nauert.
"Heather Nauert is not going to be a big-time player in the deliberations on substance in the administration", he said.
"It's interesting to me, in the middle of all this talk about Mueller and all this noise, here you have the president making a great pick for attorney general and a very solid pick for the U.N".
"We need more than a smooth spokesperson".
