Foxconn may begin manufacturing iPhone X models in India starting 2019

The iPhone X range could be manufactured in India by Tawainese manufacturer Foxconn's local unit for the first time.

According to the report, high-end iPhone development is slated to commence at Foxconn's Sriperumbudur plant, which is located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

For this, Foxconn will invest 25 billion Indian rupees ($356 million) to expand the plant, including investment in iPhone production. According to another source, the expansion will allow Apple to manufacture the more expensive models like the iPhone X line in the country.

Specifically, the report found that 16% of new iPhone owners in November were former Android users.

The analyst has almost halved expectations on the top-end iPhone XS Max while expecting the Cupertino company to produce 45 million iPhones for the quarter, down from its earlier forecast of 50 million. Meanwhile, Apple's iPhone XS models accounted for 35% of sales. Till date, Apple has assembled only the lower-cost iPhone models that include iPhone SE and iPhone 6S in India via Wistron Corp's facility in Bengaluru.

In support of the survey result, Apple's product marketing VP Greg Joswiak last month in an interview with CNET disclosed that the iPhone XR had "been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available".

The report found that Apple's iPhone XR is leading the campaign. The U.S. and China are at odds over trade and there has been some suggestion that if a full-blown trade war between the countries erupts, tariffs on iPhones could drive Apple's prices up significantly.

Foxconn, the world's biggest electronics contract manufacturer, is considering setting up a factory in Vietnam, Vietnamese state media reported this month.

The brokerage lowered its forecast for the number of units produced in the first quarter of iPhone XS Max, which starts at US$1,099, by 48 per cent.
