FBI opened probe into whether Trump working for Russians

The New York Times is reporting that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation opened a counterintelligence probe in 2017 into whether President Donald Trump was working for Russian interests.

A bombshell New York Times report reveals President Donald Trump's own firing of Jim Comey as FBI Director sparked the Bureau to initiate a counterintelligence investigation to determine if the President of the United States was working on behalf of a hostile foreign power, namely Russian Federation.

Giuliani also attempted to downplay the Democratic investigations in the House as lawmakers prepare to dig into the Trump campaign's contacts with Russian operatives.

'The fact that it goes back a year and a half and nothing came of it that showed a breach of national security means they found nothing, ' Giuliani told the Times. The deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, appointed Mueller soon after Comey's firing in May 2017 to lead the investigation.

The first was a draft of the letter Trump wanted to send Comey informing him of the firing, which the Times reports mentioned the Russian Federation investigation. No longer is this about what Manafort did prior to ever even entering Trump's orbit.

Mueller is believed to be preparing his final report on the Russian Federation investigation, though there's no timeline on when it will be released.

Sanders issued the statement on Friday night.

Mr. Giuliani said the special counsel brought up possibly having follow-up questions, but Mr. Trump's lawyers said their client would not answer them.

Trump is facing criminal investigations in Washington and NY.

Trump's detractors have taken this statement as proof that he fired Comey out of anger over the Russian Federation investigation.

The newspaper said it's not clear whether Mueller is still looking into that matter.

Cohen and Flynn have both been convicted for various crimes as part of the Russian Federation probe and have both offered evidence potentially damaging to their former boss.

In response to the events, according to the Times, the FBI began investigating whether Trump was a secret Russian agent.

According to the Times report, the inquiry was ultimately handed over to Robert Mueller.

The revelation, marking the first time a USA president has been investigated by his own intelligence services for acting for a foreign power against American interests, comes as the 18-month inquiry by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election nears its conclusion.
