Apple Explains iPad Pro Manufacturing Process In Response To Bent Units

Bent iPads: Apple says you are looking at it wrong

Apple Details 2018 iPad Pro ‘Co-Molding’ Enclosure Manufacturing Process

The company says this inspection is rigorous. The support page also explains that the antenna spits on the sides of the iPad Pro, which essentially offer optimum cellular performance, were manufactured through a high-temperature process, dubbed co-molding that bonds plastic to the aluminum surface.

Apple goes on to suggest that because the new design features straight edges that any manufacturing deviations may be easier to spot with the naked eye than previous iPad designs, that featured curved edges.

Following reports that some 2018 iPad Pros shipped with bent bodies, Apple has posted a support page that outlines the manufacturing process in hopes to end the controversy. The new straight edges and the presence of the antenna splits may make subtle deviations in flatness more visible only from certain viewing angles that are imperceptible during normal use.

Apple looks to have addressed the 2018 iPad Pro "bending" issue in greater detail for the first time, as a new support document explains why it may happen in cellular models. "After the plastic cools, the entire enclosure is finished with a precision CNC machining operation, yielding a seamless integration of plastic and aluminum into a single, strong enclosure". Some users have reported their devices being slightly bent out of the box, and Apple even confirmed to The Verge that this is the expected result of its manufacturing process.

Good luck trying to return your bent iPad Pro if you didn't purchase your iPad Pro directly from Apple, however.

What do you think of Apple's explanation for this slight bending issue in some iPad Pro models?

This 400 micron variance is less than half a millimeter (or the width of fewer than four sheets of paper at most) and this level of flatness won't change during normal use over the lifetime of the product. The company continued that the deviations were within specifications, and, more importantly, don't affect the device's functionality or strength.

Do you have a new iPad Pro?

Last September I wondered if an iPad - with iOS 11 and the Files app - might replace my MacBook. When the new iPad Pro was released late a year ago, there was no doubt it's a great device but the price was quite eye-watering.

The problem as pointed out by many is that as the iPad Pro is really thin at 5.9mm, a 400 micron (0.4mm) deviation is indeed very noticeable.

Apple gives its iPads and its MacBook Air a makeover in a bid to get you to take them more seriously.
