Fitzgerald also said Jayme was Patterson's apparent target and that he killed her parents in order to abduct the girl.
Relying on what Mr Fitzgerald called "the will of a kid to survive", a dishevelled Closs escaped the house in the tiny town of Gordon where she had been held captive, about 100km north of her home in Barron.
When sheriff's deputies went to the Closs family home, they found Denise Closs, 46, and her husband, James, 56, shot to death.
Patterson is scheduled to go to court Monday where he is expected to be formally charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of kidnapping.
Authorities say that the Closs family did now know Jake Patterson.
Her family said Saturday that she is "full of big smiles today".
Police say she had escaped on foot from a remote cabin.
"It's a awful feeling when you don't know where your kid is but I don't know how I would react if I was to have mine walk through that door". Smith said she would see Closs on Friday afternoon.
When Peter Kasinskas answered the pounding at his front door on Thursday, the first words he heard were, "This is Jayme Closs" and "Call 911".
"Jayme had a pretty good night sleep it was great to know she was next to me all night what a great feeling to have her home". He had no contact with any of the Closs family that we've been able to determine at this time. We had too much love and support around us for us to give up, ' her aunt said.
Sue Allard, Jayme's aunt, told the Star Tribune newspaper that she could barely express her joy after learning the news Thursday night.

Late Thursday, Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Jayme had been found in Gordon, but he had few other details.
Investigators said Jayme was quickly ruled out as a suspect. "We don't believe he ... talked with them, had any digital footprint with them".
Naiberg, Jayme's grandfather, said he spent a few hours with her on Friday and she was largely silent.
Police said they sent three teams to tell family members at various locations that she had been found, including one group that was attending a basketball game.
Fitzgerald previously said in November that he kept Smart's 2002 abduction in mind as he looked for Jayme, according to the Associated Press.
Patterson lived just four doors down from the Kasinskas family, but Kristin Kasinskas said she didn't realize it until he was identified as the suspect. Shortly after the 911 call, a sheriff's patrol sergeant found the vehicle, pulled it over and took Patterson into custody, Douglas County Sheriff Tom Dalbec said.
Patterson is unemployed, although worked for one day at the Jennie-O Turkey Store in Barron, where the Closs' worked for 27 years.
He has no criminal record, the sheriff said. I figured if they hadn't found her by now that the person that did this didn't want her dead, so I had hope. She said: "My only thought was to get her to a safe place". James Kuffel, the township's lone constable, said he knows nearly everyone in the area but has never encountered the Pattersons.
