U.S. singer Jennifer Lopez arrives for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on February 10, 2019, in Los Angeles. The record label was home to numerous music artists including Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. The room was literally full of Black artists that could have participated.
When queried about why Lopez was the right fit the performance, Robinson said simply Motown's music is universal. It was frightful, the antithesis to everything Motown ever represented. Even before Lopez performed, many were critical of a non-black performer being given the opportunity to pay tribute to Motown.
Some online questioned why a black artist wasn't chosen instead of Lopez, but she did received support from Smokey Robinson, who joined her in a duet to perform "My Girl", a song he co-wrote. It was a Black- people and culture- label that promoted Black talent- people and culture- with class and dignity AND SOUL!
Lalah Hathaway's whole body and self was sitting in the audience during a soulless Motown tribute.
Despite Robinson's comments, an outpour of folks fired shots at Lopez's performance during the 61st annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, taking offense to just about every aspect of the tribute including Lopez's sparkled-covered costumes.
