OnePlus: 5G Smartphone Next in Line to be Showcased at MWC 2019

OnePlus says that attendees at MWC will experience "5G gaming" on the OnePlus 5G prototype device.

OnePlus has already said that it will release one of the first 5G capable smartphones and now it looks like we're going to see it as early as this month at MWC.

For those who wondered why OnePlus is there at the Qualcomm booth, the upcoming smartphone is believed to have the latter's newest processor, the Snapdragon 855, and the X50 modem, both made by Qualcomm. However, 5G will no doubt roll out quicker in markets such as Europe and North America than in India, and OnePlus likely want to have its devices ready for this well in advance.

Pete Lau, CEO and founder of OnePlus, said: The pursuit of speed has defined the OnePlus DNA since OnePlus was founded five years ago. Since OnePlus is teasing the gaming experience, we assume that this smartphone will have quite some power to impress the audience, perhaps, OnePlus next flagship will come with a certain focus in the gaming industry.

There's no word yet on United Kingdom pricing, but as the OnePlus 6T starts at £499, we can expect the as-yet-unnamed handset to fetch around £599. At CES 2019 in January, Samsung showed off its own 5G phone under glass. It is expected that this phone will be offered as a separate model to the inevitable OnePlus 7 flagship refresh, which should also be based on the Snapdragon 855 SoC. This year, aside from the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T, there's also the company's 5G handset.

"We definitely have 5G planned for next year", Pei boasted, adding: "We will be the first, if not one of the first partners with Qualcomm to commercially launch 5G globally". The company has only given a short indication about this device for the MWC visitors.
