Following months of speculation, O'Rourke announced that he would be seeking the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2020 and opted for his campaign slogan to be "Beto for America", which boldly appears on his newly-minted campaign website.

According to The Washington Post, Beto O'Rourke's popularity has grown after he challenged Senator Ted Cruz a year ago.

El Paso, where two Central American migrant children died in December while trying to enter the U.S., has been the frontline in a partisan fight over how border security should be tackled.

Mirroring his unsuccessful campaign model, O'Rourke embarked on a solo road trip in January to meet voters, where he had been chronicling the trip on social media and raising some eyebrows with freaky antics such as a Instagram live stream from his dental hygienist's chair. In that event, he managed to get within 3 percentage points of upsetting Cruz in the country's largest red state and this fueled the talks that he has higher ambitions in politics.

The former USA representative, who lost to Republican incumbent Ted Cruz in Texas' 2018 Senate race, released a video announcing his candidacy hours before starting a three-day tour across Iowa.

"I think it's significant that we have someone from the border running for president", Vela said.

"We can free ourselves from the distinction of being the country that imprisons more of its fellow citizens than any other country on the face of the planet", O'Rourke said. No one person can meet them on their own.

In his announcement video made inside his El Paso home, O'Rourke also pledged to lift up the country's rural areas, "work on real justice reform and confront the hard truth of slavery and segregation and suppression", as well as "squarely confront the challenge of climate change before it's too late".

Acording to the Post, the former congressman's GOP ties are likely to become an issue as he enters a crowded Democratic presidential primary field that has leaned leftward. He joins Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and more in the race to the White House.
