Release bid fails for Vietnamese woman in Kim Jong Nam murder

Siti was freed on March 11 after the prosecutors withdrew the murder charge against her, Huong will now remain as the only suspect in the case still behind bars, CNN reported. He added that Vietnam would continue to ask for her release.

Vietnamese Ambassaador Le Quy Quynh said he was "very disappointed" with the attorney general's decision.

Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung "expressed disappointment about Malaysian prosecutors' decision to reject #Vietnam's request to free #DoanThiHuong" during a meeting in the Vietnamese capital on Thursday with Malaysia's ambassador, Zamruni Khalid, the ministry said via Twitter.

Huong' s counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik told the court that Attorney-General has rejected the request. He said prosecutors were being unfair to Huong as her case was similar to Aisyah. Very obviously, there is discrimination. "The AG favored one party to the other".

Vietnam called on Malaysia on Tuesday to free a Vietnamese woman accused of the 2017 VX poison murder of the North Korean leader's half-brother, a day after a Malaysian court dropped the same charge against an Indonesian woman.

But Huong says she was duped by North Korean spies into approaching him, believing it was a harmless prank for a TV show.

Two other North Korean nationals, whom Malaysian police had identified as persons of interest in the investigation, were on the same commercial flight that carried Kim's body out of Malaysia.

Defence lawyers have maintained the women were pawns in an assassination.

Malaysian judge Azmi Ariffin had made that ruling last August based on the testimony of 34 witnesses and airport security camera footage tendered by the prosecution.

Outgoing Malaysian Bar president George Varughese said Tommy Thomas may have his reasons for not explaining why the Indonesian woman was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, citing the current proceedings against Doan whose application for her charge to be dropped was dismissed yesterday.

Doan Thi Huong, 30, in bullet-proof attire, was brought to the hospital under heavy guard in a van of the Prisons Department at 9.20 am and left at 10.40 am, said her lawyer, Salim Bashir. Teh said Huong was unwell and needed medical treatment.

"I have no idea what is going on", a exhausted and pale-looking Huong, who was wrapped in a red headscarf and a coat, said through an interpreter.

The judge agreed to postpone the trial until April 1 but warned there should be no more delay. The defense part of the trial was to have started Monday.
