Workers on Sanders' 2020 White House campaign join union

"I'm proud that our campaign is the first presidential campaign to unionize". "We can not just support unions with words, we must back it up with actions".

Staffers for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign are now the first-ever major party presidential campaign to unionize, according to a statement released Friday.

The campaign workers designated the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 to represent them as their exclusive bargaining representative.

Sanders, who first vied for the Democratic nomination in 2016, has built his campaign platform on securing workers' rights, and fighting against economic inequality.

Working on political campaigns at any level often involves grueling hours and low pay.

Earlier this year, Sanders apologized to female staffers on his 2016 campaign who said they experienced sexual harassment from male staffers.

While Sanders' is the first large-scale presidential campaign to unionize, the move comes in the wake of a growing wave of organization within political operations - for candidates and causes - that have for decades been effectively accepted as hard and occasionally risky working environments. All campaign employees below the rank of deputy director will be represented by the union, which said the number could grow to more than 1,000 members.
