The iconic building, along with 18th-century Paris during the French Revolution, was featured prominently in the popular 2014 action game Assassin's Creed Unity. Books, photographs, internet research and interviews with historians were also helpful in the process, according to published reports.

Since the fire, billionaires and companies from around the world have pledge hundreds of millions of dollars to finance the cathedral's reconstruction. Additionally, Ubisoft announced that it will be making Assassin's Creed Unity available for free on PC for one week. Because of this highly-detailed data Ubisoft has on the cathedral, many believe the French developer can help in the restoration process.

"Video games can enable us to explore places in ways we never could have otherwise imagined".

In addition, Ubisoft said it is also offering people the chance to experience "the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame the best way we know how".
