Tesla investigating incident of car catching fire in China

United States electric carmaker Tesla said on Monday it was investigating a video that had gone viral in China that appeared to show one of its cars spontaneously catching fire.

The video taken from a closed-circuit camera in the parking lot of a residential building showed a white sedan bearing Tesla's logo emitting smoke from both sides of the vehicle before catching fire Sunday evening.

In 2013, Tesla Model S cars suffered a series of fires.

The U.S. electric-car maker has sent a team to Shanghai and is in touch with local authorities, Tesla said on its official Sina Weibo account Monday. "From what we know now, no one was harmed".

Reuters was not immediately able to verify the origins of the videos, which Weibo users said were taken in Shanghai.

The automaker has said its EVs are about 10 times less likely to experience a fire than petrol-powered cars, based on its fleet of over 500,000 vehicles which have driven more than 10 billion miles. For now, Tesla has had to rely on exporting its cars to China, though it is in the midst of building its first overseas plant in Shanghai in the hope of minimizing the impact of tariffs.

Tesla did not confirm the vehicle model but social media identified it as Model S.

Tesla's lithium-ion batteries have reportedly caught fire in at least five cases both as a result of a collision as well as when parked. Some users urged the automaker to quickly find the cause, whereas others speculated over the impact to the value of Tesla cars now on the road.
