Chief executive Elon Musk told an investor presentation he expected regulator approval in some jurisdictions for autonomous ride-hailing that could use some of the Teslas on the road if their owners agree to share the vehicles. The presentation is almost 4 hours long but you can skip forward to about 1hr 12mins, when Pete Bannon is invited to the stage. The fundamental utility of your vehicle will increase by a factor of 5'. The new chip that Tesla uses is manufactured by Samsung, and while supporting fully autonomous driving, the new FSD hardware is 20% less expensive per vehicle than the Autopilot 2.5 hardware the FSD replaces. Tesla responded to criticism that it was behind in simulated miles for its computers by saying that real-world data collected by its cars-either with or without Autopilot-was far more valuable.

He said Tesla would be adding a rideshare app and that owners who chose to participate in the network could benefit from that.

California, Tesla's biggest USA market, requires proof that fully autonomous cars can drive safely on public roads, but most other states aren't as stringent.

Tesla's plans to rival Uber and Lyft sounds enticing, no doubt, but the automaker risks facing regulatory hurdles, even if it can get its hardware and software to work perfectly. The company instructs drivers to keep their hands on the wheel when those systems are engaged, sparking some criticism of the term. "The probability of failing is lower than somebody losing consciousness", said Musk. Some of the cars will be Tesla vehicles that are being loaned out by their drivers, from which Tesla will take a 30 percent cut. He shared these plans as part of a broader vision for an autonomous ride-sharing network during the company's Autonomy Day. Tesla had previously said that its vehicles would be fully self-driving by 2018 but that target was missed. 'All you have to do is update the software'.

'I think there'll be a transition period, where people will be able to take over from the Robotaxi, ' Musk said.

"We immediately sent a team on site and we're supporting local authorities to establish the facts", the company said in a statement.

Leading up to that point, steering wheels will remain in Tesla's robotaxis, but users will also have the ability to intervene while driving if they want to.

On Monday, Musk said Tesla has a huge advantage over autonomous vehicle competitors because it gathers a massive amount of data in the real world.
