SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft Heads to ISS With Cargo After Successful Launch

It was David Saint-Jacques' very first "space catch".

"To all the teams around the world, we welcome to the ISS the Dragon spacecraft", Saint-Jacques replied.

SpaceX as of late affirmed that its Dragon capsule meant to convey team to the ISS was destroyed in a test a month ago, however things appear to go better for the company's supply launches. "The cultivation of microalgae for food, and as part of a life support system to generate oxygen and consume carbon dioxide, could be helpful in future long-duration exploration missions, as it could reduce the amount of consumables required from Earth", NASA said in an online post detailing the project.

The Canadian Space Agency says in a release the seeds will return to Earth a month later, along with blood and breath samples for a Canadian health probe into the impact of living in space on astronauts' bone marrow.

The crew aboard the station was to open the hatch Monday afternoon to begin unpacking the Dragon's 5,500 pounds of cargo. The trip is the 17th SpaceX supply mission to the crewed satellite.

Kenny Todd, International Space Station Operations and Integration manager at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, explained during the postlaunch press conference that launch success far overshadowed fatigue with the early morning launch.

It's the second station visit for this recycled Dragon, which was launched by SpaceX on Saturday from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The Dragon will set out back to Earth after it will spend four weeks attached to the ISS, and will be carrying a payload of 4,400 pounds. The others include Northrop Grumman's Cygnus cargo craft that launched in April from Virginia, two Russian Soyuz capsules and two Russian Progress cargo capsules.

This experiment station, NASA previously explained, enables researchers on the ground to control studies on the ISS "as if they were in space themselves", opening the doors to a new type of communication between the two destinations.
