The order books have opened today and VW is already taking refundable £750 deposits for its landmark battery vehicle, which will start from "under €30,000 in Germany" - or £26,000 in sterling.
This is the new VW ID.3 electric vehicle, the first of a new generation of bespoke Volkswagen EVs scheduled for series production, and therefore the first of the brand's new ID series. Unfortunately for American Volkswagen fans, the company has not announced worldwide availability for the auto just yet, so it's unclear when drivers in other regions will be able to get behind the wheel of an ID.3.
Finally, there'll be the ID.3 1ST Max. It is scheduled to go into production before the end of this year.
The Volkswagen Group can really be considered a "Tesla killer" on account of its vast resources and technologies, unlike smaller rivals in the USA and China that have laid claim to this title on the strength of a single electric vehicle (EV). Starting today, you'll be able to place a deposit of €1,000 down to reserve an electric "ID.3" hatchback for yourself. The "ID.3 1st Plus" edition, which was introduced in Berlin on Wednesday, will come with fancier interior lighting and a two-tone exterior. That gets a panoramic glass roof and an augmented reality head-up display.

Volkswagen intends to sell only 30,000 copies of the ID.3 1ST edition (with a mid-range battery pack of 58 kWh and 420 km (261 miles) of WLTP range) at a price of less than €40,000 (in Germany).
"After the Beetle and the Golf, the ID.3 starts the third major strategic chapter in the history of our brand", VW sales chief Juergen Stackmann said in a statement. Tesla amassed 180,000 orders for its "affordable" long-range electric vehicle in one day in the USA, while VW took 10,000 first-day deposits on the day it opened reservations for the ID 3 hatchback.
Volkswagen says the ID 3 First edition will be priced at under €40,000 (£34,000) in Germany, with customers in the United Kingdom required to pay a £750 deposit.
