A 35-year-old North Carolina mother has been charged with attempted first-degree murder of her 7-month-old daughter.
7-week-old Shaylie was found hours later by a Henderson County man after he and his wife heard her crying. The child is believed to be in good condition, according to the sheriff.
Police dogs found no trace of anyone else in the area except for Madden, Henderson police said at the press conference.
"It was simply in my opinion by the grace of a merciful God that we had a female that goes to check her mailbox, (and) she really believes that she hears the faint cries of an infant, " Griffin said.
The baby, largely unharmed, managed to roll out of the vehicle seat, and was in a wooded area located at the base of the embankment when she was discovered. That is when they contacted the Henderson County Sheriff's Department. The child, a girl named Shaylie, was reported missing after she was reported kidnapped by a man with red hair and a woman with black hair who were both wearing ski masks.
According to the 911 call obtained by TV station WYFF, the woman told a dispatcher the couple found a baby "down in the woods". Officials now say Madden lied and that there was no evidence that a kidnapping took place.

It was nearly by chance that the baby was found: A woman living near the ravine happened to hear her as she went outside to check her mail.
"There's no people down here, " the woman said during the seven-minute call.
It was Fowler, saying he'd just found a baby at the bottom of a ravine. Authorities now claim that Madden threw the baby down an embankment.
"We don't believe that to be factual at all", Griffin said.
Sheriff Griffin shared in the May 10 news conference that investigators believe Madden acted alone and that she was responsible for Shaylie going over the bank and into the ravine. She summons her husband, who is a self-employed grading contractor.
