This is the latest vessel to be reportedly vandalised in the region.

The attack did not lead to any casualties or an oil spill but caused significant damage to the vessels' structures, he said.

Saudi Arabia continued shipping through the Strait of Hormuz during the so-called tanker war, a phase of the 1981-88 conflict between Iraq and Iran when both foes attacked vessels in the Gulf.

The statement did not say who carried out the operations and made no mention of Iran, amid escalating tension in the region after the United States military sent forces, including an aircraft carrier, to the Middle East.

- The UAE and Saudi Arabia have sought to find other routes to bypass the Strait, including building more oil pipelines.

"The ministry stressed that exposing commercial ships to acts of sabotage and threatening the lives of their crews is a unsafe development, stressing the need for the worldwide community to assume its responsibilities to prevent any parties trying to undermine the security and safety of maritime traffic", the foreign ministry statement read.

One of the ships was holed at the waterline.

Citing heightened tensions in the region, the United Nations called on "all concerned parties to exercise restraint for the sake of regional peace, including by ensuring maritime security" and freedom of navigation, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Iran's foreign ministry called the incidents "worrisome and dreadful" and asked for an investigation into the matter.

Oil prices rose on Monday, with Brent crude futures trading up 1.1 per cent at US$71.77 a barrel at 0906 GMT. But it raised risks for shippers in a region vital to global energy supplies at a time of increasing tensions between the US and Iran over its unraveling nuclear deal with world powers. Gulf stock markets fell on Monday, with Dubai down 2.6 per cent and the Saudi index down over 2 per cent.

The US issued a new warning to sailors as the UAE's regional allies condemned Sunday's alleged attack that the UAE says targeted four ships off the coast of its port city of Fujairah.

Pipelines owned by the UAE and Saudi Arabia can't carry as much oil as tankers, and while Saudi Arabia and Iran have alternate seaports, their neighbors don't.
