HTC Exodus 1s blockchain phone announced, set to cost $250-300

A new Exodus phone is coming

A new Exodus phone

HTC has been making inroads into the blockchain-on-your-phone market for a while now, with a renewed focus since the original Exodus smartphone.

Phil Chen, who serves HTC with the unusual title of Decentralized Chief Officer, described the new device as a part of the company's mission to "empower the user".

We don't have many details about the handset yet, but HTC has said the phone will run as a full node - in other words, it will validate and relay Bitcoin transactions, and help keep the blockchain network running. Moreover, HTC says that the phone will be capable of acting as a full Bitcoin node; a feature that Peter Chen, CEO of HTC, says is a "really important piece of the pie" for the Bitcoin ecosystem.

As a blockchain smartphone, the Exodus 1s can store tokens and cryptographic keys of a user inside a secure enclave within the device.

It's blockchain week in NYC and according to many, one of the reasons we had this parabolic rally in Bitcoin price over the last few days. Now, the Taiwan-based smartphone company has officially announced the successor to the Exodus 1, the Exodus 1s. As well as software development kit for its Zion Vault crypto storage solution, it will allow Bitcoin enthusiasts enough space and processing power to download the whole Bitcoin blockchain and operate a full node for the network.

Speaking to CoinDesk, Chen said that the phone is " going to be a lot cheaper, it will be a lot more accessible".

"The bitcoin blockchain is about 200 [gigabytes], and it's growing about 60 gigs per year".

HTC plans to launch the device by Q3, and while the exact price has not yet been finalized, the price is expected to range between $250-$300.

Following this news, HTC marks the biggest step yet seeking to integrate mobile technology with blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. You'll just be one of the extremely cool kids with an entire Bitcoin node in your pocket. Once HTC launches the 1s, Chen expects the team to apply the experience from supporting a bitcoin node to other networks.

In saying so, the EXODUS 1s will also conduct normal smartphone operations as well, such as music, videos, pictures, apps, and dapps.
