Selena Gomez and Bill Murray’s playful side at Cannes Film Festival

While promoting her new film The Dead Don't Die at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, the singer and actress, 26, opened up about her fears about the impact social media has made on her generation.

Her comments came as a Malaysian teenager took her own life after posting an Instagram poll asking if she should live or die.

Gomez is one of the world's most watched Instagram stars, with over 150 million followers, but is known to have taken breaks from the platform. Back in March, the star revealed: "I'm now in the studio and it's going really good".

During a press conference for the movie, Gomez said, "I would say for my generation, specifically, social media has really been awful".

"I understand that it's fantastic to use your platform, but it really does scare me to see how exposed that these young girls and these young boys are, and they're not really aware of the news or anything going on", she continued.

She claimed many young people were unaware of important news issues.

"It's selfish - I don't wanna say selfish, that's rude - but it's risky for sure".

"As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram", she explained, "I sort of freaked out".

"I think it's pretty impossible to make it safe it at this point", Gomez said.

Gomez said she was "grateful" to "have a platform" and tried to use it to "share things that I'm really passionate about". I don't do a lot of pointless pictures. "I like to be intentional with it", she said. "It just scares me", she explained. I see these young girls ... They are devastated, dealing with bullying and not being able to have their own voice.

"It can be great in moments, but I would careful and give yourself time limits in terms of when you can use it and not". I mean, you still can't tell me who the hell "Selena Gomez" is - but Gomez, as he calls her, "I really like". "Kindness and encouragement only for a bit!"

"It is not that healthy to be on [social media] all the time", she added. After being notably absent from the 2019 Met Gala, a source shared with ET that she's staying away from "the pressure and expectations of being under a microscope" right now. "There's no blocking anything, they're exposed to it immediately", she said at the news conference with her co-stars Bill Murray, Chloe Sevigny and Tilda Swinton.
