Number of US measles cases tops 800

839 cases of measles reported in 23 states; no confirmed cases in Alabama

Lauren Gardner, an associate professor of civil engineering at Johns Hopkins and a UT Austin engineering alumna, commented: "Critically, we recommend that public health officials and policymakers prioritize monitoring the counties we identify to be at high risk that have not yet reported cases, especially those that lie adjacent to counties with ongoing outbreaks and those that house large worldwide airports".

This year's count of measles cases has already surpassed 800... and it's only May.

FORMAN: When he first was sick with measles, he was 7 months. "He recovered uneventfully and only presented years later with a lethal complication".

HOGAN: In the summer of 1991, the city and state redoubled their efforts.

HOGAN: All the efforts eventually paid off. The outbreak eventually petered out. In 1993, newly elected President Bill Clinton pledged to raise childhood immunization rates. And we love our children.

HOGAN: Over the next few years, federal funding increased sevenfold.

As for adults, the CDC recommends that those who were born during or after 1957 who do not have evidence of immunity against measles should get at least one dose of MMR. The idea of a booster shot caught on.

That's 75 more cases than the agency reported last week and is inching closer to the 963 cases reported in 1994 which is the highest number of cases in a year in the last 25 years. Here's Dr. Redlener again.

"We had a health care system that simply wasn't created to serve low-income kids living in cities who were more reliant on public clinics, which weren't necessarily open all the time. or were few and far between", Conis says.
