Pompeo met with Putin in Sochi after his discussions with Lavrov, and was reportedly told by the Russian president that his recent phone conversation with Trump convinced him some of the differences between Russia and the USA could be resolved.
Pompeo also warned Russian Federation not to interfere in the 2020 US elections, while Lavrov denied that Russian Federation was involved in any 2016 election meddling.
"And here [in the EU] we need 27 countries to agree, it lasts for years and nothing happens", Putin said. "Our elections are important and sacred and they must be kept free and fair and with no outside country interfering".
Lavrov however repeated Moscow's denials of interference and said it was "absolute fiction" that Russian Federation had colluded with the Trump campaign.
He also stressed that President Donald Trump's administration has been clear that the United States does not recognize Russia's attempted annexation of Crimea and added that the USA side planned to keep in place the sanctions related to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
He also noted that "there was no personal message from Putin to Trump".
