Surprised? McLaren only revealed its plans for a new grand touring model at the Geneva Auto Show in March. The 570 GT clearly taught it a lot; not only about how you might go about doing such a vehicle, but also that the market for it already exists among its patrons. Whether that eventually mean the expansion into a fourth category, McLaren is so far only teasing about - it'll likely depend on just how well the GT is received.

The Woking vehicle maker has prepared the GT for every eventuality an owner might face when driving on the country's public roads. One other detail of note regarding this motor is how McLaren explains the engine has more than 95 percent of its peak torque available between 3,000 and 7,250 rpm - certainly something that will help towards being able to carry the car's weight easily.

Total cargo capacity amounts to 569 litres, including 419 litres in the rear trunk, which is accessed via a front-hinged glass tailgate. The auto features a MonoCell II-T monocoque. The model is a bit longer and more elegant than the other models from the brand.

To find the best balance between comfort and control, the GT gets a new Proactive Damping Control suspension system. According to its maker, the new model is 130kg lighter than its closest core competitor. The driver interface operates in a similar way to a smartphone and the seven-inch central touchscreen is used to select from vehicle functions such as satellite navigation, Bluetooth telephony, media streaming and voice activation. At nearly 4.7m, the new McLaren is longer than any of the cars in the McLaren Sports or Super Series.

A new infotainment system offers HERE navigation, real-time traffic information, and all of the HVAC controls for the dual-zone climate control, from a 7-inch touchscreen.

The McLaren GT rides on custom Pirelli P ZERO tires created to meet the demands of high-performance driving and comfort and refinement in equal measure. Or, to put it another way, expect the GT's "Comfort" mode to be very compliant indeed - even with the introduction of 21-inch alloy wheels at the back, the largest ever fitted to a McLaren.

'The new McLaren GT combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a handsome body and true to McLaren's ethos of designing superlight cars with a clear weight advantage over rivals, ' he said. Custom electrically-adjusted seats get heating as standard, along with padding suited more to long-distance driving than track days. Suspension, steering and brakes are all bespoke and optimized to provide unforgettable driving experience of a Grand Tourer. Nappa leather trim comes as standard but buyers can also opt for softgrain luxury leather or Alcantara.

The McLaren Grand Touring is now available for pre-order with delivery beginning later this year.
