A Chicago mother and daughter accused of murdering a pregnant woman and cutting the baby from her womb may have wanted to "raise the child as their own", the police superintendent speculated Thursday as charges in the case were announced.

The family of Ochoa-Uriostegui, a married mother of a three-year-old son, said a woman on Facebook had lured her to the home by offering a stroller and baby clothes.

Marlen Ochoa-Lopez attended her classes at Latino Youth High School last month and planned to pick up her 3-year-old at day care later that afternoon. A 46-year-old woman told her "my girl has all brand new boy clothes her son never wore", according to a screenshot provided by her family.

Marlen Ochoa-Lopez disappeared on the same day that a woman made a 911 call in April about a newborn baby having trouble breathing, Chicago police said.

The nine-months-pregnant woman went to the Figueroa's home expecting to gather some baby clothes and other donated items, police said.

Any hopes that the young woman might still be alive were dashed on Wednesday, when officials confirmed that human remains discovered in a trash can outside a home on the southwest side of Chicago belonged to Ochoa-Lopez, and that her baby had been ripped from her womb.

"We believe that she was murdered, and we believe that the baby was forcibly removed following that murder", said Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago police spokesman, to CNN.

The family had been making public pleas to locate her since she disappeared, at one point asking police to check the identity of a newborn brought to a Chicago fire station shortly after birth.

Ms Evans and her 10-year-old daughter, Samantha, were killed in their Addison apartment and Ms Evans' 7-year-old son, Joshua, was found slain in a Maywood alley.

Desiree Figueroa told them her mother was in the hospital for problems with her legs. Later, an anonymous tip lead the police to check the DNA of the baby.

At the same time, Figueroa had started a GoFundMe campaign for the funeral of what she said was her dying baby, said Sara Walker, a spokeswoman for Ms Ochoa-Lopez's family. The baby is in critical condition and on life support. A 911 dispatcher was told on April 23 that the baby was blue and not breathing.

Police took at least three people into custody at the home on 77th Place on Tuesday, three weeks after Ochoa went missing.

Authorities allege Clarisa Figueroa and her daughter Desiree killed Ms Ochoa-Lopez and and extracted the baby.

Ochoa-Lopez's body was found in a garbage can in the yard, along with the cable used to strangle her and other evidence.

"Apparently, Miss Ochoa had bought other baby items from Clarissa, so they knew each other", deputy chief Brendan Deenihan said. Clarisa Figueroa and Desiree Figueroa have been charged with the murder of Marlen Ochoa-Uriostegui and with the aggravated battery of Marlen's baby boy.

Cortes, the pastor, said Ochoa-Lopez's husband tried to immediately report her missing to the police, but was told to come back in 72 hours.

Ochoa-Lopez's anguished relatives searched for her for three weeks.

"Due to the fact that I'm in school and can't work at the moment, I can't afford to buy the rest of the things since I'm short on cash right now", Ochoa-Lopez wrote, according to screen shots of the exchange, reports CBS Chicago.
