A Sherpa who has scaled to the summit of Mount Everest almost two dozen times broke his own record for most successful ascents of the world's highest peak.

He works as a guide for foreign mountaineers attempting to climb the Himalayan peak and is known for his endurance and experience at high altitudes.

"Without the help of Sherpas, it would be for many foreigners is impossible, the mountains to climb", said Ang Tshering Sherpa, the former President of the Nepal mountaineering Association.

"The 49-years-old veteran climber Kami Rita Sherpa from Thame village of Solukhumbu made 23rd successful climbs over the world's highest peak; Mt. Everest (8848m)".

Past year he ascended Everest for the 22nd time, breaking the previous record of 21 summits he shared with two other Sherpa climbers.

Rita says he will try and climb the peak two more times.

Kami Rita has already climbed most of the peaks above 8,000 m including K2, Cho-oyu, Lhoste and Annapurna among others.

Kami Rita Sherpa reached the top of the 8,848-meter mountain at 7:50 a.m., Mira Acharya, a tourism ministry official, told Kyodo News by phone from the mountain's Base Camp.

"I am like a soldier who leaves behind their wives, children, and family to battle for the pride of the country", he told the AP. The mountain also claimed the lives of five climbers, including an experienced Sherpa guide who was knocked down a crevasse by a rescue helicopter.

His latest ascent took him two summits clear of two fellow sherpas, hiking officials said. The Sherpas are the ones who take care of setting up the camps, carrying the loads on their backs, cooking food and carrying oxygen tanks.

She said about 30 other climbers were on the way to the summit and were expected to top the peak on Wednesday or Thursday, when the weather window is expected to remain open.

Nepal has issued 378 permits to mountaineers for this year's spring climbing season.

This season, almost 1,000 people, including 378 paying climbers, will attempt the summit.
