The latest initiative was dubbed Artemis, after the goddess of the hunt and the moon in Greek mythology and the twin sister of Apollo. Artemis 2 would be crewed and orbit the moon in 2022.

He said the first astronauts to walk on the moon in the Artemis program will only spend a few hours on the surface, much like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin did during the pioneering Apollo 11 mission 50 years ago this summer.

Last week, Bridenstine said that the additional $1.6 billion of funding was a "down payment" on NASA's efforts, which would allow the space agency to develop the necessary technology required to reach the moon.

NASA announced that a female astronaut will walk the moon in 2024 as part of its exciting "Artemis" program - making her the first woman to step onto the Earth's satellite.

Ottawa Sens hire Leafs assistant D.J. Smith as new head coach
He was captain of the Spits and at Acadia University for four years, a university background that Babcock shares. The latter had been serving as interim head coach for the Senators after Guy Boucher was sacked in early March.

Maxar is an older NASA partner, having been responsible for the robotic arms deployed on the space shuttles and the International Space Station (ISS).

The orbital station will initially consist of a simple power and propulsion element and a small habitat module. When the researchers heated this material with a laser to simulate the heat caused by micrometeorite impacts that strikes the surface of the moon, they discovered that the samples released a burst of ions that matching that of ionized heavy water (deuterium oxide), which is basically water with made from the deuterium isotope of hydrogen that can be used in certain types of nuclear reactors but isn't potable.

According to a NASA statement about the events, the media call will include Bill Gerstenmaier, who leads NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate; Michele Gates, director for the power and propulsion element; Dan Harman, who manages the Gateway program at NASA's Johnson Space Center; and Mike Barrett, project manager for the power and propulsion element.

"But in the coming months, we're going to put together a cadre of people that we will select from for those lunar activities". NASA will not specify it in every detail but instead will buy it as a service, Bridenstine said. Aerospace giants such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin are vying for the contract as are new players like Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin. "The goal here is speed".
