After a tepid critical reception, X-Men: Dark Phoenix has endured further disappointment with the lowest-opening weekend in the mutant franchise's history. With this installment, X-Men may have reached its 19-year franchise end, as Fox and Disney have now merged.
Dark Phoenix is sitting at a 22% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and 65% for its audience score it also had the worst box office opening in the franchise. The movie tells the classic comic-book arc of Jean Grey's transformation into the Phoenix, a storyline that will be familiar to even casual X-Men fans from 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, and reviews are saying that despite a strong turn from Sophie Turner as Grey, the movie doesn't do anything new with the material.
To be fair to the albeit awful "Dark Phoenix", the X-Men franchise has followed a downward trend at the box office, with the "Deadpool" films standing as obvious outliers - the first making $132 million in its opening weekend in the US.
