Beninato's post on Dr. John's Facebook page said memorial arrangements will be announced.

Based in New Orleans, he recorded over 20 albums and blended music styles of blues, jazz, boogie and rock and roll. Off of his 1973 album In the Right Place, "Right Place Wrong Time" made Dr. John a household name, as it was a top ten hit at the time.

Dr. John "created a unique blend of music which carried his home town, New Orleans, at its heart, as it was always in his heart", she wrote.

At 13 Dr John met Professor Longhair and began working as a professional musician.

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr also tweeted a picture, along with the message: "God bless Dr John, peace and love to all his family".

"His funky approach to blending musical styles and imaginative persona helped diversify the New Orleans Sound", said Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, which awarded Dr. John with six Grammy Awards from 15 nominations.

Dr. John was a major feature at global jazz festivals and was known for mingling English with French Creole and African patois in a cultural mix specific to New Orleans and its multicultural history. It has also been reported that Dr. John's own granddaughter, Stephanie O'Quin, was also one of the well-wishers marching in the celebratory parade.

The music world lost one of its unique performers this week with the passing of New Orleans legendary pianist Dr. John. "Walk on Gilded Splinters our Old Friend, we will all meet up at The Right Place".

The musician was synonymous with New Orleans and was fiercely proud of his city. His many collaborators included The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Rickie Lee Jones, and Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, who produced his 2012 album, Locked Down. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame back in 2011.
