Some Democrats are pushing for impeachment proceedings linked to former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether the president obstructed justice.

In a rare compromise on Monday, Nadler said he would hold off on suing Barr for now after the Department of Justice agreed to hand over some key underlying evidence from Mueller's report. Nadler opened the hearing by citing Mueller as an authority on the supposed massive intervention of the Russian government in the 2016 election in favor of Trump-an unsubstantiated narrative that was fabricated by the USA intelligence agencies and has been the focus of the Democrats' demands for a more aggressive posture toward Russia as well as a harsher crackdown on oppositional views on the internet.

Easing tensions with Barr, at least for now, Nadler said the panel will not vote to hold the attorney general in criminal contempt. Attorney General William Barr has initiated such an inquiry. But a House vote will give them increased standing if they do decide to file lawsuits.

"The Mueller Report was a disaster for them", Trump wrote.

Tuesday's vote reflects an evolving strategy for Democrats, who have moved toward lawsuits and away from criminal contempt as they investigate the Trump administration.

Later Monday, Trump lashed out at Dean and Democrats who continue to push for evidence of obstruction of justice that could ultimately be used to try and remove the president from office through impeachment.

Efforts to raise sunken Danube tour boat starting in Hungary
Several bodies have been recovered from wreckage during the salvaging of a tour boat that sank in the Danube River in Budapest. A huge floating crane which arrived at the scene of the accident last week was being put in position for the procedure.

"John Dean's been a loser for many years", Trump told reporters at the White House.

"If the department proceeds in good faith and we are able to obtain everything that we need, then there will be no need to take further steps", Nadler said in a statement.

He said he saw parallels between Mueller's findings regarding Trump and those of congressional investigators looking into Nixon's administration decades ago. "I don't even want to talk about him", Pelosi, a Democrat, said at a Washington conference in reply to a question about Trump's latest barrage of personal insults.

"Mr. Dean has made a cottage industry out of accusing presidents of acting like Richard Nixon". In fact, Dean, a convicted felon, has repeatedly charged that past Republican presidencies, including Reagan, Bush, and now Trump, are "worse than Watergate".

Collins said to the witnesses before pivoting to Dean specifically: "This committee is hearing from the 70s and they want their star witness back".

The sudden turn of events came before a pivotal week for House Democrats, who are torn over whether to go ahead with impeachment proceedings and are looking for ways to focus public attention on Trump's actions.

On Monday, the House Judiciary Panel heard from John Dean, a former White House counsel whose testimony helped bring down former President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal.
