Oak tree planted by Macron, Trump has died

It was a symbolic gift from Emmanuel Macron to Donald Trump at the height of their "bromance" previous year: an oak tree ceremoniously planted in the manicured lawns of the White House by both leaders.

The Saga of the Tree has a sad ending, it turns out: A sapling given to President Trump by French President Emmanuel Macron to great fanfare has died, according to French news reports - and the symbolism wasn't lost on people who noted the strained relationship between the world leaders.

But relations between France and the U.S. have since frayed - over issues ranging from Iran to trade - and the tree did not survive, a diplomatic source said this week.

After the planting ceremony, Macron tweeted: "100 years ago, American soldiers fought in France, in Belleau to defend our freedom".

It reported Monday the tree, meant to symbolize friendship between the two nations, died in quarantine and was never replanted.

It was a symbolic gesture: the tree came from a northern French forest where 2,000 US Marines died during the First World War. "It will be replanted afterwards", he said on Twitter. Just like the Macron-Trump love-in, it is no more.
